A new artificial intelligence weather forecasting model developed by Google DeepMind has demonstrated superior accuracy compared to traditional physics-based systems in global medium-range weather predictions. The model, named GraphCast, uses machine learning to analyze decades of historical weather data and can generate a 10-day forecast in under one minute on a single Google TPU. In a comprehensive evaluation, GraphCast outperformed the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ (ECMWF) high-resolution forecast system, which is considered the gold standard, on over 90% of 1,380 test variables. The AI system showed particular strength in predicting severe weather events, including tropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers, with greater precision. Researchers emphasize that AI models like GraphCast are not intended to replace but to complement existing numerical weather prediction systems, potentially leading to more timely and accurate warnings for extreme weather.
