A new artificial intelligence weather forecasting model developed by Google DeepMind has demonstrated superior accuracy compared to current state-of-the-art systems in global medium-range weather predictions. The model, named GraphCast, uses machine learning to analyze decades of historical weather data and can generate a 10-day forecast in under one minute on a single machine. In a comprehensive evaluation against the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ high-resolution forecast (HRES), GraphCast provided more accurate predictions for over 90% of 1,380 test variables, including critical atmospheric conditions. Researchers note that while AI models like GraphCast show remarkable speed and potential, they are designed to complement rather than replace traditional physics-based models, which remain essential for understanding underlying weather processes and ensuring reliability. The development marks a significant step in applying machine learning to complex Earth system science challenges.
