A new artificial intelligence weather forecasting model developed by Google DeepMind, named GraphCast, has demonstrated superior accuracy and speed compared to the world’s leading traditional system. The AI model, detailed in a study published in Science, can generate a 10-day global weather forecast in under one minute on a single machine, a task that takes conventional systems hours on supercomputers. GraphCast outperformed the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ high-resolution forecast (HRES) on over 90% of 1,380 test variables, including critical predictions for extreme weather events like tropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers. The model was trained on nearly four decades of historical weather data to learn cause-and-effect relationships within the Earth’s climate system. While not intended to replace current systems, researchers see it as a powerful tool that could augment and improve existing forecasting infrastructure.
