A new artificial intelligence weather forecasting model developed by Google DeepMind, named GraphCast, has demonstrated superior performance compared to the world’s leading traditional system. The AI model, described in a study published in Science, provides more accurate 10-day weather predictions in under a minute, significantly faster than the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) system which takes hours to compute. GraphCast was trained on nearly four decades of historical weather data to learn the cause-and-effect relationships of Earth’s weather system. In a comprehensive evaluation, it outperformed the ECMWF’s high-resolution forecast (HRES) on over 90% of 1,380 test variables, including critical predictions for extreme weather events like tropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers. The researchers emphasize that AI models like GraphCast are tools to augment, not replace, established physics-based systems, offering a new, complementary approach to weather prediction.
