A new study reveals the mechanism by which aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) evades the body’s immune defenses. Researchers discovered that TNBC tumors produce high levels of a protein called TSPAN6, which activates a specific signaling pathway within tumor cells. This pathway, in turn, causes the tumor cells to release a chemical signal that deactivates nearby cancer-fighting T-cells, effectively switching off the local immune response. This immunosuppressive environment allows the cancer to grow unchecked.
